i can’t say that i’ve ever watched an hour long youtube video before, but this presentation by an anthropology professor about youtube and it’s implications for our society, communication, etc., was fascinating / humorous / touching (yup). mainly because he uses tons of great youtube moments to emphasize his points. yes, i really am recommending that you watch a youtube video about youtube.

Brainbow

November 1st, 2007 jamie 2 comments

Researchers at Harvard came up with an ingenious genetic method to express fluorescent proteins in a rainbow of colors to label different neurons in mice brains. You can check out the paper below to read the details of the method, or just look at the amazing pictures at Wired. Best microscopy i’ve ever seen.

I think I saw this guy on BoingBoing, but i can’t remember. In any rate, his photography is really really really really good. He has a lot of amazing work posted on his website, http://www.edwardburtynsky.com/. Check out the quarry shots from Vermont, striking. In other news, my mom reported that there is snow on the top of Mount Mansfield! Bring On Winter!

I don’t have a nice picture from the video, but here is a great advertisement promoting AIDS awareness. Which is all well and good, but the video is amazing, time lapse graffiti on a large scale!

Hot New Sport!!

August 24th, 2005 jamie No comments

An innovative new sport, known as Toilet Bowl Trash Can Surfing or TBTCS, is sweeping the nation. Originating in Vermont, this trick-heavy fast-paced sport soon will surpass even street tennis and cricket in popularity.

Here you can see one of the sport’s innovators and rising stars (who also happens to be my brother) pulling a switch tweaked ollie on a standard bowl.

Aaron Mckenna’s Expert Opinions

April 10th, 2005 jamie 3 comments

Our friend Aaron has posted some of his insights on the web recently. Apparently he’s a pretty modest guy, cause he never told me about them. Here are Aaron’s thoughts on Education:

My Dream School
By Aaron

A basketball court, a swimming pool and 4.1 computer with 32 gigabits for each student . I would also like a gym.

Intriguing, yes? And Aaron’s thoughts on Endangered Species:

Humpback Whales
by Aaron

My name is Aaron. I am in 4th class. I have chosen the humpback whale because I like whales and I would like to see at least one type of whale grow in its population.

I looked up some information in Encarta 97. Here is the information I found out:

Humpback whales are perhaps the best known of the baleen whales occuring in all oceans. Humpback whales migrate to the pack ice in summer and to shallow tropical breeding areas in winter. Mating results in a single young born 11 or 12 months later. The calf is nursed for less than one year.

Please take a moment and applaud Aaron for the wonderful work he is doing, speaking out on the controversial topics of education and endangered species.
