I've been using Vista for 1.5 years now, I don't think I've ever had a problem, (except my old wireless USB key wasn't supported), and I can't remember the last time it locked up except for when I cranked the CPU up. As a disclaimer, I really only use my home PC for net browsing, video games, and occasionally messing around with some programming here and there. I use it as a media server to stream video wirelessly to my PS3 and it works flawlessly.

If I were a programmer that dabbled in making hardware drivers or something maybe I'd feel more of the rage, but all the so-called suckiness of Vista really hasn't impacted me at all.

Some anecdotal info on my new system:
AMD 1055T @ 4.2ghz on all six cores and stable - It is very interesting watching the load distribution on six cores. Looks like it is fairly well balanced with 4+ applications. With less than 4, the load is taken up by 2-3 cores, while the rest are <10% loaded. Also, under heavy load, my clock speed drops ~9-11% (~400mhz) with all "auto" settings except memory clock.

Also, a note: I had to update my bios after a crash due to a core not being recognized. As my mobo is fairly new, it should have been SOP, but I was a bit overzealous with the new parts and forgot to do that before configuring the system completely.

I will be lowering my speeds soon, it seems any higher than 4.4ghz is unstable, but its good to know I can push this to 4.2 with stock heatsink and fan under load (<70C). I did not manually tweak this at all, I simply let AMDs soft/firmware and ASUS bios do the work on "auto" settings across the board. Voltage is ~ 1.45v but varies real-time depending on AMD's OC utility determined settings. These new heat-pipe-style heatsinks seem to work very well.

Oh, oddly, it also seems to do better at a lower mem speed (1067mhz) and higher multiplier on the cores.

System:
AMD x6 1055T (Malaysia) 2.8ghz, @ ~4.2ghz (varies between 4.1ish and 4.3ish)
Asus M4A88TD-V EVO/USB3
Corsair DDR3 4GB 1333mhz (running @ 1067 though)
ATI Radeon HD4870 512MB DDR5 (not OC'd)
ATI Radeon HD4250 256MB (Shared I think, not used yet, need OS upgrade to utilize Hybrid CrossfireX)
Antec TruePower 750W PSU
2x SATA DVD-RWs
1x USB2.0 Samsung DVD-RW
1x USB2.0 Maxtor 1TB HD (Backup and DVD cache)
1x LSI SCSI controller
1x 15kRPM 150GB Maxtor SCSI (OS and oft-used apps)
1x 10kRPM 300GB Maxtor SCSI (Games/Storage)
On board audio
Modified Case from 1995. :D

Thanks for the info Steve, much appreciated. I will keep an eye on Win7.

Yes, I like to game, and the PC will be used for that. Typically 4 games a year or so. Buying Mass Effect 1 today, then I'll do the sequel, based on JD's rec.

I just got my new 1055T running all six cores @ 3.35ghz. I didn't even tweak it, just used AMDs AutoOC feature, which is very nice. It's pretty damn fast (upgraded from an Athlon 64 3700+ @ 2.2ghz), but I really don't have anything that can utilize the power. Just future-proofing at this point.

On another note, now that I think about it, I don't think I have ever personally paid for an OS before...unless you count WPI tuition/technology fees.

I have only used Vista on test VMs at work and helping support my sister and dad. I say stay far, far away.

I have used Win7 even less but it does seem much better in first impressions. Also the general consensus, fwiw, is that it is solid.

As far as Linux, Ubuntu 10.04, Lucid Lynx, is my main OS for work, on my netbook and I still use Karmic, 9.10 as a dual boot on my PC. 10.04 is really nice.

I assume you want to game? I think a Win7/10.04 dual-boot would be pretty easy to setup and then you could see how much you use Ubuntu for day-to-day stuff. They even have an Ubunutu installer you can run from Windows to setup the dual boot. Though I do not know if it support Win7.

That is a perfectly acceptable practice Brian. In a world of hundreds of emails a day, such practices bring my attention to significant/relevent information and questions.

Carry on.

I am always intruiged by the sociology behind a "reply-all" storm. Although I haven't seen one in a long time. I remember when I was an intern back in '99 and these were very common. There was always a bevy of confused, angry, and sometimes scared responses from people who were either new to email or just really stupid and couldn't figure it out.
This one time a girl sent out one of those "Microsoft is testing a new beta email tracking system and will pay you $10...." chain mail to the whole company. Man were there some scared old ladies who replied to that one. The girl was fired later that day.
