George Michael Last Night at the Roxy!

August 31st, 2007 Greg 2 comments

WOW! Guys I have to tell you Jamie and I had a FABULOUS time last night at the George Michael reunion tour show at the Roxy. He even pulled out a few of the old WHAM tunes, it really blew the doors off the place! Unfortunately we didn’t get any group shots of us with any hotties, but I figured I’d share this cute pic of Jamie with all of you-

World Beard Championships

August 28th, 2007 jamie 1 comment

” The amount of work that contestants put into their facial hair is truly inspiring. One can’t compete at this level by stocking up on beard wax the week before the event – these men have made a serious commitment, and their year round work has paid off in aces. As with anything else, they get as much as they put into their beards. The championships are a time to share in the glory of their dedication. I met a hundred heroes that day.”

Poison f-ing Ivy

August 24th, 2007 Dacunha 15 comments

So…oddly, I get this poison something (ivy, sumac, oak) between the fingers of my right hand every couple years. Same spot (and only spot), same looking stuff…in an attempt to possible identify something that can recur as such, I found this gallery of Poison Ivy rashes. Ouch. (Not for weak stomachs)

Anyway, I only found anecdotal evidence to suggest this type of recurrence is even possible without re-exposure to urushiol…but I find it extremely hard to believe I just happen to be touching the plants in the same exact place between my pinky and ring fingers, and only in that place, year after year.

Mother Teresa, an atheist?

August 23rd, 2007 rob 3 comments

As a former Catholic, I found this article very interesting.  I may even check the book out at some point.  Also, the article mentions Thomas Merton.  He was a monk who wrote extensively, I still enjoy his writings even though they are Catholic based, they are influenced by eastern thought which I love.  Here’s two quotes of his that I like:

“Do not be too quick to condemn the man who no longer believes in God: for it is perhaps your own coldness and avarice and mediocrity and materialism and selfishness that have chilled his faith.”

“I believe we are going to have to prepare ourselves for the difficult and patient task of outgrowing rigid and intransigent nationalism, and work slowly towards a world federation of peaceful nations. How will this be possible? Don’t ask me. I don’t know. But unless we develop a moral, spiritual, and political wisdom that is proportionate to our technological skill, our skill may end us.”

The End of Faith

I just finished reading this great book that looks at how faith-based religion is in many ways at odds with reason and ultimately, the survival of our species. A great read that I recommend to anyone & everyone.

NanoDrop It Like It’s Hot

Me and a few friends recently made this video comparing two ways of quantitating DNA for the Brown iGEM team. It’s supposed to be a little tongue in cheek, and also sorta sciency. enjoy!

Anyone interested? They are playing at the Orpheum Theatre on October 17th. Erika and I met up with Aaron and Doug last time they were around and we all had a great time. It’s a fantastic show and anyone who can appreciate the guitar will be entertained.

Tickets go on sale tomorrow. The videos on their website give a good idea of what to expect.

Reverse Graf
This could be old news (the NPR article is from ‘04) but I still find it pretty amazing. This guy goes around selectively cleaning off surfaces on walls buildings and tunnels, to do his own form of graf. authorities are stumped because cleaning buildings isn’t technically illegal. wish i thought of it…

Bacteria Makes Gasonline, the New Biofuel

The bacteria already produced fatty acid chains.  Take the acid off of the end of the chain, and you have a hydrocarbon ready for refining.  Cool idea!  Makes me want to get into biochemistry.
