North Bennett Street School Open House

October 31st, 2007 rob 1 comment

Hey ya’ll.  I know it’s been a while since I’ve talked to a lot of you as well as posted to McCrappy.  But it’s been a busy life with school all day then going to work for a few hours and then heading home sometime around 8 – 8:30.  Anyways enough excuses.

This Friday and Saturday is my schools open house, from 10 to 2 on Fri. and 10 to 3 on Sat.  I’ll be here all day friday and probably for a good portion of the afternoon on Saturday.  If you’re looking for something to do you should come in a check it out.  Plus it’s in the north end with lots of tasty restaurants if you need another excuse.

Give me a call or shoot me an email if you’re interested and please tell others.  It’s pretty awesome stuff being shown.

More details can be found here at the schools web page.

Backwards Pumpkin Tax

October 31st, 2007 Dacunha 2 comments

I just saw this and thought…wow, that’s really backwards. To avoid paying tax on your pumpkins in Iowa, you need to fill out a form stating you’ll eat it and not use it for decoration. This seems like something that could be extended to other food products, perhaps under other pretenses that are just as silly. I think it should be considered a food, and what you do with it after you purchase it is your own business. If I want to buy a honeydew melon and carve G.W.’s monkey-face in it, that’s my right as a honeydew melon buyer!

Historical Quotes

Three years ago the most common thing I heard from yankee fans was

”It will be another 86 years before they win another one”

Musings

October 27th, 2007 cheeko 2 comments

So as some of you know, I decided to leave HP. I start my new job Monday. To unwind from the whole process I took a week to myself to relax. Went out to CA to visit some friends. Flew into San Diego, got stuck in some fires, finally made it to LA to see my brother, got to see some live music, then took 2 days to drive up the coast by myself taking pictures. I filled an entire memory card, but I need to review and clip down and edit the photos. Here is one quick one that I cropped up though. (man it was a rough trip ;) )

Love Jesus? Then Hit a Home Run!

October 24th, 2007 Josh 4 comments

Apparently, the Rockies will only hire you (article is from last year) if you consider Jesus to be your Lord and Savior.  The same guy who wrote that article also has this one (posted yesterday) , where he defends himself from his point of view, which is basically that religion should not be part of the hiring process for the Rockies.  Kind  of interesting.  Now we have another reason to hate the Rockies.  Go Sox!!!

Possible Cancer Cure: Dichloroacetate (DCA)

October 23rd, 2007 Josh 3 comments

Here is a New Scientist article discussing this potential new treatment, which has received little media attention.  Maybe that’s because DCA, the small molecule pictured above, has no patent, and thus no real money can be made.  Here is the official University of Alberta research page on the subject.  This research needs funding and attention, so check it out.

Radio on the T

October 19th, 2007 cheeko 6 comments

Basically the T has started broadcasting its own ad based radio in certain stations and plans to expand it after Thanksgiving to most stations.

There’s a petition people started to try to get them to stop.

Speaking of legality…

October 18th, 2007 Steve 2 comments

As you may, or may not, be aware, the fantastic Democrat-lead senate caved to pressure from the White House and is getting ready to pass a bill that would grant retroactive immunity to telecom companies that were supporting the warrant less wiretapping that has been going on since 2001.

See the Washington Post article.

But Senator Chris Dodd, also running for President, has put a ‘hold’ on the bill. Basically a parliamentary move that keeps the bill from even being brought to a vote. It’s a pretty hardcore move for a single senator to block legislation that way.

Salon, adds may be required but are worth it, has some pretty good info here.

A senator with balls? Who knew?

Shitty ALCS 2007 Experience at Jacob’s Field

October 18th, 2007 Josh 7 comments

Check out this sweet story from a couple of chicks being harassed two nights ago at Jacob’s Field. It’s pretty ridiculous, including racist remarks like “Rice K,” and bottles being thrown at them; definitely worth the read. Its titled “Down & Out-Douchebagged: The Whole Story“.

Go Sox!

Is this legal?

October 18th, 2007 Mackin 10 comments

It seems to me this is a violation of the Bill of Rights. I guess you forfeit your right to search and seizure at the airport, so why not on the T. This has to be illegal.

Blood Flow May Affect How We Think

October 17th, 2007 Josh 3 comments

Pretty interesting MIT article.  Blood flow affects functional areas of the brain, implying that new treatments for brain disorders may be based on drugs that control blood flow, an entirely novel approach.

Article Search

October 15th, 2007 Josh 10 comments

I was wondering if those out there with college accounts could check any databases they might be able to access either at their library’s web page or in person if they happen to be there. The journal is “Brain and Cognition 14″ and the article is titled “Psychology of Time Awareness” by JW Brown. The other details are a date of November 14, 1990, and pages 144-64.

Here is the abstract. I signed up for a free NCBI account, but that did not grant me access to the full article. It seems like an interesting article, which is why I ask if anyone is able to download it.

“Mind transforms the continuance of physical space-time into moments (the absolute Now) and blends these moments into an apparent continuity through an overlapping of unfolding capsules. The flow of psychological time is an illusion based on the rapid replacement of these capsules. Each mind computes the measure of time passing and duration from the decay of the surface present in relation to a core of past events. As each new surface is generated, that surface, the rim of the immediate past, recedes in the wake of rising contents. This recession, an uncovering of phases latent in the original traversal, exposes layers in the past forming the content of the immediate past moment. The surge of the microgeny to a surface that dissolves the instant it appears, the priority of the Self in the unfolding sequence, the feeling of agency, create a Self in a state of becoming, a Self that travels in time like the crest of a wave, always in pursuit of a future just beyond the grasp of the present.”

Seems like an interesting read to me.

Cell phone telemarketing

October 15th, 2007 cheeko 1 comment

I got this today, it may or may not be true, but the phone number is the legit federal do not call registry, so no harm in registering in either case.

“Cell phone numbers going public tomorrow – REMINDER….all cell phone numbers are being released to telemarketing companies tomorrow and you will start to receive sale calls. ….YOU WILL BE CHARGED FOR THESE CALLS

To prevent this, call the following number from your cell phone: 1-888-382-1222.

It is the National DO NOT CALL list. It will only take a minute of your time. It blocks your number for five (5) years. You must call from the cell phone number you want to have blocked. You cannot call from a different phone number. HELP OTHERS BY PASSING THIS ON TO ALL YOUR FRIENDS. It takes about 20 seconds.”

Someone’s bitch

October 12th, 2007 cheeko 2 comments

Wow this kid is so totally boned. http://www.telegram.com/article/20070920/NEWS/709200771/1008/NEWS02

Pretty sure this story made McCrappy at the time it happened, but now the trial and sentencing is completed. Personally I didn’t see the evidence, but it must have been fairly compelling if it only took 10 hours to deliberate. 5-7 years and a registered sex offender. His life is probably officially over. Wonder if he finished his degree…. he was 21 when this went down.
