Incredible deformities

May 29th, 2008 Yakov 4 comments

Ever wonder what an octopus child looks like? What would a face that weighs 50 lbs feel like? This is an interesting collection of some of the more outlandish deformities found by medical science. Look out for tree man! :)

Debut Album

May 28th, 2008 rob 20 comments

Saw this on a random post it’s pretty funny, yet much like something you’d do in 7th grade.

Your Debut Album

1 – Go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first random Wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.

2 – Go to Random quotations: http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.

If you want to do this again, you’ll hit refresh to generate new quotes, because clicking the quotes link again will just give you the same quotes over and over again.

3 – Go to flickr’s “explore the last seven days” http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/
Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

Put it all together, that’s your debut album.

Post em in the comments.

This kid is obviously very gifted. He could be a very good social engineer. He should read some Kevin Mitnick and make a good life for himself :)

Anyone Moving?

May 21st, 2008 Greg 13 comments

Howdy y’all! I am finally going to spread my wings and fly out of the nest that is my parents house, and make the move into Boston (area). I did a little perusing of Craigslist’s “roommmates wanted” listings last night, but figured it’d be worth seeing if someone I know is interested in living together, rather than jump in with a strange stranger.

So is anybody thinking of/interested in moving any time soon? I am looking to move in August/September. Due to living with my parents now and girlfriend before that I am pretty clean; and due to how much I work I won’t be making noise much. What I am trying to say is … I would make a good roommate!

Let me know if you are interested!

Why I hate American Idol

May 21st, 2008 Steve 20 comments

Here is a perfect example of why I despise this show. Hell, I wouldn’t even have known about this bullshit if I hadn’t read about it here.

Here is one of the finalists, fortunately not the Phi Sig kid, singing his version of imagine:

Notice anything missing? Here’s John Lennon just to compare:

What’s a couple verses between friends? Oh, and, apparently Imagine is his ‘favorite’ song.

Have you thought about running for President?

May 19th, 2008 Dragoneyes 22 comments

The up comming election has left many of us feeling like the Richard Prior movie.

Vote for none of the above.

I think if the owner put Casa Dice on the ballot he would win by a landslide…  Considering he’s not afraid to say what he feels and as it appears he’s for what in history calls American Values!

Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures

May 19th, 2008 cheeko 4 comments

I originally wrote this as a comment to that other thread. I’m not pretending to be objective here, so take it as you will, figured I’d post here since it got so involved and because I think its a different message. DaCunha and other MMO fans might be interested in this.

Post Mortem: This weekend was crazy. Slept all of 3 hours between launch Saturday and 2:30am last night, dinged 31 before I finally crashed. This might be the best MMO I’ve ever played.

Launch was incredibly smooth for the 50-100k people who joined early access.

Full game launch is Wednesday morning, will be interesting to see how the servers hold up, but they’ve been astoundingly solid so far. Not a single crash, excellent ping times in the 50ms range. No major bugs to report (also surprising in large MMO launches). Servers being in NJ probably helps in terms of pings, but Aussie guild mates have had no problems either.

As for the game itself? Bloody, full of incredible visuals and images, the combat is clean crisp and just different enough to really make it feel fresh. Nothing like bashing a guys skull in and seeing a spray of blood splatter your screen (fatalities, not every kill ;) . The vistas in the game I’ve seen so far have been pretty astounding. The zones are huge and transition seamlessly. The cities and other NPC populated areas are bigger and more alive/realistic feeling than any city I’ve seen in a game to date. You really feel like you’re visiting real places. I’m slowly ramping up the graphics settings with each play session (trying to see what the new comp can handle) and each bump in settings amazes me more.

The only drawbacks I’ve seen so far are 1) the movement transition from swimming to land can be a little annoying in some places. Usually jumping right as you hit the shore will solve any hangups. 2) You can’t fight while swimming, this was a design decision I guess, but takes some getting used to. 3) Coming from EQ2, which had the best chat/command interface I’ve seen yet in a game, Conan takes some getting used to. / commands don’t auto start in your command line, you need to first context it either with a click or an enter or something. 4) The chat tabbing could use a little work, but I use ventrilo so thats a minimal impact. 5) The pvp stat tracking doesn’t seem to have been turned on yet, holding out real judgment until after Wednesday.

People have begun work on custom UI’s so hopefully that resolves a few of the issues. I’m also hoping for UI scripting tools, and XMPP chat extensions.

Other thoughts: Joined an FFA PvP server, so the PvP has been killer and fun, there are probably some minor tweaks that can be made to help stabilize the player base (griefing in 1 of the newbie zones was a little out of control. Anyone who played beta knew to avoid the zone, but it discouraged a few people). Group and solo are both viable play styles. Leveling is VERY quest based. You can grind mobs, but it wouldn’t do you all that much good compared to people who are running quests and exploring and generally following storyline elements. The lore had been rich and deep so far. My guild claimed its spot for our guild city last night, so I’ll know more soon on how the city building looks/works. So far from what I saw of the markers the player cities will be pretty damn big. I’m hoping by the end of the work to have some more info about the border kingdoms as well.

Cheeko’s Grade so far: A to A-, definitely worth the price of admission for anyone MMO fan, especially ones looking for a change from the 4 year old second gen games. This is definitely the first big entry into third gen after VG sucked and LOTRO was kinda mediocre.

Let me know if people have questions. I know Gabe, Corey and Berube were putting in some hours this weekend as well. I think in the end they went PvE. I rolled on the Tyranny server if anyone is looking to group at some point.

Honor Killing – From the View of the Father

May 11th, 2008 JD 7 comments

Here is a story that made my stomach turn. A few weeks ago, in Basra, a father killed his daughter for apparently becoming infatuated with a British soldier. Both her brothers and her uncles joined in to beat this 17 year old girl to death while the mother cried for mercy. These honor killings are quite common in the Middle East, as you probably know. This interview with the father shows a side of humanity so dark I cannot grasp it. After 17 years of being this girl’s father, he killed her and has instantly swept her memory under the rug – preferring to wish he never had a daughter in the first place.

FTA: ‘I have only two boys from now on. That girl was a mistake in my life. I know God is blessing me for what I did,’ he said, his voice swelling with pride. ‘My sons are by my side, and they were men enough to help me finish the life of someone who just brought shame to ours.’
